Prunus Kanzan, is a Japanese Flowering Cherry. It is a deciduous tree celebrated for its lavish display of double, rich-pink flowers in mid to late spring. The flowers appear in large, clustered bunches, covering the upright branches, creating a dramatic show-stopping effect. Following the flowering period, the tree produces bronze-colored new leaves that mature to a glossy green, turning vibrant shades of orange and red in autumn.

This variety is vase shaped while young and spreads as it matures. It is an excellent choice for use as a specimen tree, in avenues, or in mixed borders. It thrives in full sun and prefers well-drained, fertile soil. This tree is particulary wind-hardy and is well-suited to various garden styles, including formal, cottage, and Japanese gardens.

This tree can tolerate occasional dry spells, although it benefits from consistent moisture for optimal growth and flowering. When planting the Kanzan Cherry, space the trees about 4-5m apart to allow for their mature size and spread. It requires regular watering during its establishment period but is relatively low-maintenance once mature.

Mature Size: approx. 8m tall and 6m wide.

Trimming: Trim Prunus 'Kanzan' (Kwanzan Cherry) in late winter or early spring while the tree is still dormant. Remove any dead, diseased, or crossing branches to maintain a strong structure and encourage healthy growth. Lightly prune after flowering to maintain shape if necessary.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring just before new growth begins. A second application in mid-summer can be beneficial if the tree shows signs of nutrient deficiency.

Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase to ensure the soil remains consistently moist. Once established, Prunus 'Kanzan' is moderately drought-tolerant but benefits from deep watering during extended dry periods, especially in summer.

Pest Control: Watch for aphids, caterpillars, and scale insects. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Regularly inspect the tree for early signs of pests, especially on the undersides of leaves and young shoots.

Disease Management: Prunus 'Kanzan' can be susceptible to fungal diseases such as powdery mildew, leaf spot, and blight. Ensure good air circulation around the tree and avoid overhead watering to minimise the risk. If signs of fungal disease appear, such as discoloured or spotted leaves, treat with an appropriate fungicide and remove affected parts. Good garden hygiene, including cleaning up fallen leaves and debris, can help prevent disease.
