Paulownia tomentosa

Paulownia tomentosa, or empress tree, is a fast-growing deciduous tree known for its huge, heart-shaped leaves and showy spring flowers. In mid to late spring, before the foliage appears, it produces upright clusters of fragrant, tubular lavender flowers with pale yellow markings. These are followed by persistent seed capsules that add texture into winter.

Ideal as a feature tree in large gardens, naturalistic settings, or cottage-style landscapes, it grows best in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. Though tolerant of poor soil and urban conditions, it benefits from wind protection while young. Allow 5 to 6 metres of space due to its wide canopy. Grows quickly to 10–12 metres tall with a broad, rounded crown.

Trimming: Prune in late winter to remove dead or weak growth and shape the tree. For larger leaves and ornamental foliage, cut back hard annually (coppicing), though this prevents flowering. Allow mature trees to grow unpruned if flowering is desired.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring to support vigorous growth, especially if coppiced. Mature trees in the ground often need minimal feeding.

Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase. Once established, it is drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during prolonged dry spells.

Pest Control: Generally pest-free, though young trees may be vulnerable to caterpillars or aphids—treat with insecticidal soap if infestations occur.

Disease Management: Rarely troubled by disease, but monitor for leaf spot or powdery mildew—look for discoloured or mottled leaves. Remove affected foliage and apply fungicide if symptoms persist. Ensure good airflow and avoid overhead watering.
