Magnolia Stellar Gem
Magnolia Stellar Gem is a refined deciduous magnolia known for its abundant display of soft lilac-pink, star-shaped flowers that appear on bare branches in early to mid-spring. The blooms are lightly fragrant and finely formed, offering a delicate, luminous presence just as the garden awakens from dormancy. Following the flowering period, lush green foliage emerges, providing a fresh, tidy canopy through the growing season.
Ideal for cottage, woodland, formal, or contemporary gardens, Stellar Gem serves beautifully as a feature tree, accent in mixed borders, or seasonal highlight near patios and pathways where its early flowering can be fully appreciated.
Prefers a sunny to partially shaded position with well-drained, humus-rich soil. Shelter from strong winds and avoid planting in frost-prone hollows to protect early flowers. Allow 3-4 metres spacing to accommodate its mature form and structure.
Reaches approximately 3.5-4 metres tall and 2.5-3 metres wide when mature, developing a softly rounded habit with a reliable and showy early spring flowering season.
Trimming: Minimal pruning is required. Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches after flowering in late spring or early summer. Avoid heavy pruning, as it can reduce next season’s flowering and spoil the tree’s natural shape.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring, just as growth begins. Mulch annually with composted bark or well-rotted manure to improve soil structure and moisture retention.
Watering: Water deeply during dry spells, especially in the first few years after planting. Established trees are moderately drought-tolerant but benefit from supplemental watering in prolonged dry conditions.
Pest Control: Typically pest-free. Occasionally susceptible to scale insects or aphids on new growth—treat early with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap if necessary.
Disease Management: Watch for leaf spot and honey fungus, although both are uncommon. Avoid injuring the roots when planting or cultivating nearby, as magnolias are shallow-rooted. Improve air circulation by thinning overcrowded growth if leaf spotting occurs.
