Magnolia Koban Dori

Magnolia Koban Dori is a stunning deciduous variety renowned for its large, golden-yellow flowers that appear in mid to late spring, just as the new foliage begins to emerge. The flowers are rich in colour with gently rounded petals, creating a warm and cheerful display on the bare branches before the glossy green leaves unfurl.

Ideal for formal, contemporary, and woodland gardens, Magnolia Koban Dori is perfect as a feature tree or for planting in mixed borders where its spring flowering can be fully appreciated. It thrives in full sun to part shade with rich, free-draining, slightly acidic soil and protection from strong wind. Space approximately 3 to 4 metres apart for garden planting.

Forms a compact, upright tree reaching around 4 to 6 metres high and 3 to 4 metres wide.

Trimming: Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and remove any dead, damaged or crossing branches. Avoid heavy pruning, as magnolias are slow to recover and may not reshoot well from old wood.

Deadheading: Not necessary, but spent flowers can be removed to tidy the plant if desired.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring just before new growth appears. In poor soils, use a liquid feed every 6 to 8 weeks during the growing season to support healthy growth and flowering.

Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase. Once established, it prefers consistent moisture, especially during dry periods. Magnolia roots are shallow, so mulch around the base to retain moisture and protect from temperature extremes. Avoid waterlogged conditions.

Pest Control: Generally pest-free. Occasionally monitor for scale insects or aphids on new growth. Treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap if infestations occur.

Disease Management: Ensure good air circulation and avoid overhead watering to reduce the risk of fungal issues such as leaf spot. Root rot may occur in poorly drained soils. Remove and dispose of any affected leaves to prevent spread.
