Liquidambar styraciflua Aurora

Liquidambar styraciflua Aurora is a striking deciduous tree admired for its deeply lobed, maple-like leaves that display rich green tones through spring and summer before turning vivid shades of red, orange, and purple in autumn. The upright, pyramidal form and brilliant seasonal colour make it a superb feature or avenue tree.

Ideal for formal, parkland, and large garden settings, Liquidambar Aurora is perfect as a specimen tree or for creating vibrant autumn displays. It thrives in full sun with moist, well-draining soil and benefits from regular watering during dry periods. Avoid highly alkaline soils for best leaf colour. Space approximately 4 to 6 metres apart for avenue planting.

Forms a strong, upright tree reaching around 10 to 15 metres high and 5 to 6 metres wide.

Trimming: Prune in late winter while the tree is dormant to remove any dead, damaged or crossing branches. Light shaping can be done at this time, but avoid heavy pruning as this can spoil the natural form. Do not prune during active growth to reduce stress on the tree.

Fertilising: Apply a slow-release general-purpose fertiliser in early spring. In nutrient-poor soils, a liquid feed every 6 to 8 weeks during the growing season can support strong growth and leaf colour.

Watering: Water regularly during the first two years after planting to help establish a strong root system. Once established, it is relatively drought-tolerant but will benefit from deep watering during long dry periods. Prefers moist, well-draining soil.

Pest Control: Generally pest-free. Occasionally, aphids or scale may appear on young shoots. Treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap if needed.

Disease Management: Rarely affected by disease. Root rot may occur in poorly drained soils. Ensure the planting site has good drainage. Rake and dispose of fallen leaves in autumn to prevent fungal issues from overwintering.
