Notify MeLagerstroemia Black Leaf is a striking deciduous shrub or small tree grown for its deep, near-black foliage and vibrant summer flower clusters in shades of pink to red, depending on conditions. The dark leaves create bold contrast through the warmer months, while the crinkled, crepe-like flowers sit above the foliage for a long flowering season. As temperatures cool, the foliage can take on extra tones before leaf drop, and the smooth, mottled bark adds interest as the plant matures.
Ideal for modern, Mediterranean, or cottage garden styles, Black Leaf thrives in full sun and needs warmth for the best flowering. Plant in fertile, free-draining soil and avoid cold, exposed sites, especially in frost-prone areas. Water regularly while establishing, then during dry spells in summer, and lightly prune in late winter to encourage fresh flowering growth. Space plants 2-3 m apart to allow for a well-shaped specimen.
Mature size: Reaches around 3-5 m in height and 2-4 m in width, forming a rounded shrub or small tree.
Trimming: Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth appears. Remove any dead, crossing, or inward-growing branches, and lightly shape to encourage a strong framework and abundant flowering. Avoid excessive pruning, which can reduce flower production.
Deadheading: Not essential, but removing spent flower clusters can encourage a tidier look and a possible light second flush.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring. In nutrient-poor soils, supplement with a liquid feed every 4-6 weeks during the growing season to support healthy foliage and flowering.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant but flowers best with consistent moisture during dry periods. Ensure soil is well drained.
Pest Control: Monitor for aphids, scale, and sooty mould. Treat early with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil if signs of infestation appear.
Disease Management: Ensure good air circulation to minimise the risk of powdery mildew. Avoid overhead watering, and remove any affected leaves promptly. Use well-draining soil to help prevent root diseases.
