Juglans regia

Juglans regia, commonly known as the English or Persian Walnut, is a large deciduous tree known for its edible nuts and ornamental value. It produces pinnate leaves that turn yellow in autumn, creating a stunning seasonal display. In late spring, it forms clusters of inconspicuous flowers, followed by the growth of round, green husks that eventually reveal the tree's prized crop of walnuts in autumn.

The English Walnut tree thrives in full sun and prefers deep, fertile, well-drained soil. It can reach a height of about 20 metres and a similar spread, making it better suited for larger landscapes or parks. The roots produce a substance that can inhibit the growth of certain other plants nearby, so care should be taken when deciding where to plant it.

The walnut tree requires minimal pruning, which is best carried out in late summer to reduce the risk of 'bleeding'.
