Hoheria populnea Purple Wave is a fast-growing evergreen shrub or small tree, prized for its distinctive deep purple foliage that adds rich colour and contrast to the garden year-round. In late summer and early autumn, it produces clusters of small, white, star-shaped flowers, creating contrast against the dark leaves. This New Zealand native is not only visually appealing but also attracts pollinators, adding biodiversity to your garden.
Ideal for hedging, screening, or as a specimen plant, it complements native, contemporary, and coastal gardens. Thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-draining soil with moderate moisture. Space plants 2 to 3 metres apart if using as a hedge or screen.
Mature size: Grows up to 6 metres tall and 3 metres wide, forming a graceful, upright shape with cascading branches.
Trimming: Prune in late winter or early spring to shape the tree and remove any dead or damaged branches. This will also encourage fresh growth.
Fertilising: Apply a slow-release, balanced fertiliser in early spring to support growth and flowering. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and improve soil quality.
Watering: Water regularly during the first year to establish the roots, particularly in dry periods. Once established, it is drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering in prolonged dry spells.

Disease Management: Watch for powdery mildew, which appears as a white, powdery coating on leaves. Improve air circulation by pruning crowded branches and apply a fungicide if needed.
