Fagus Cockleshell
Fagus sylvatica Cockleshell is a captivating deciduous tree noted for it's narrow, upright form. This cultivar features wavy, crinkled leaves with a distinctive shell-like appearance, emerging a vibrant green in spring and transitioning to rich gold and bronze hues in autumn that are very showy against smooth grey bark. The smooth, grey bark adds further visual interest, making this tree a standout in any season.
In the garden, Fagus Cockleshell is ideal for a variety of styles, including woodland, formal, and contemporary gardens. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained, fertile soils. This very hardy European Beech is perfect as a specimen tree, for creating mixed borders, or forming hedges and screens due to its dense foliage and striking appearance.
Space the plants about 3m apart to allow their broad, spreading form to develop fully. Mature Fagus Cockleshell trees typically reach a height of 12m and a spread of 2.5m.
Trimming: Prune Fagus Cockleshell (Beech) in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches to maintain a healthy structure and promote vigorous growth. Light trimming in summer can help maintain its shape.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth. If the soil is poor, a second application in midsummer can help maintain vigour.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase, ensuring the soil is consistently moist but well-drained. Once established, Fagus Cockleshell is relatively drought-tolerant but will benefit from deep watering during prolonged dry periods.
Pest Control: Monitor for common pests such as aphids and caterpillars. Treat infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Ensuring good air circulation around the plant can help prevent pest issues.
Disease Management: Watch for signs of fungal diseases such as powdery mildew and root rot. Improve air circulation and avoid overhead watering to minimise the risk. Remove affected parts and apply a fungicide if necessary to control disease spread. Ensure the soil has good drainage to prevent root rot.
