Eucalyptus ovata

Eucalyptus ovata, commonly known as Swamp Gum, is a highly adaptable and fast-growing Australian native tree, renowned for its ability to withstand extreme conditions, from water-logging to drought. This makes it an invaluable resource for providing shelter and producing high-quality firewood. Notably, it has ground-durable wood and is capable of reliable coppicing, meaning it can regrow from the root base after harvesting, a trait that adds to its appeal for sustainable wood production.

Reaching a mature height of 20 metres and a width of 6 metres, Eucalyptus ovata exhibits a very rapid growth rate, with the potential to achieve 8 metres in height within just five years. Its evergreen foliage, combined with a low branch habit, makes it an ideal choice for shelter in exposed or moderately exposed conditions, including those found in Canterbury. The tree thrives in full sun and is drought-resistant, featuring a moderately dense canopy with very rough bark that sheds from the upper trunk and branches, adding texture and visual interest to the landscape.
