Cotinus coggygria Grace (Smoke Tree) is a deciduous hybrid tree carrying exquisite, large foliage, with tones of green and purple, turning vivid scarlet-red in autumn. Flowers appear during spring and are large, conical, purple-pink. Perfect as a street tree, it can reach up to 2m tall.
Trimming: Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and encourage strong new growth. Remove any dead, damaged or crossing stems, and cut back harder if needed to control size. For the best large, colourful foliage display, it can be cut back more firmly while dormant.
Deadheading: Deadheading is not usually necessary, but spent flower heads can be removed if you prefer a tidier appearance.
Fertilising: Apply compost or a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring. Avoid overfeeding, as excessively rich conditions can encourage soft growth.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase until the plant is well rooted. Once established, Cotinus ‘Grace’ is fairly drought tolerant, but it will benefit from watering during extended dry periods.
Pest control: This plant is generally trouble free, though occasionally aphids or scale insects may appear on new growth. Treat with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil if required.
Disease management: Watch for wilt, leaf spot and dieback, particularly if the plant is stressed or growing in poorly drained soil. Signs include sudden wilting, blackened leaves, spotting or branch decline. Remove affected growth, keep the plant healthy with good airflow, and ensure the soil drains well.
