Corylus avellana

Corylus avellana, commonly known as the Common Hazel, is a deciduous shrub or small tree appreciated for its edible nuts and ornamental value. In late winter to early spring, it produces clusters of yellow catkins, which create an attractive display against the bare branches. These are followed by the growth of broad, rounded green leaves, and in late summer to early autumn, the plant yields its prized crop of hazelnuts.

The Common Hazel thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers well-drained soil. It can reach a height of about 3-8 metres and a similar spread, making it suitable for large gardens or woodland settings. Hazel is also often used in hedgerows. This plant is very low maintenance, only requiring minimal pruning to maintain its shape and promote a healthy growth habit.
