Cercis Oklahoma

Cercis canadensis Oklahoma is a stunning deciduous tree known for its vibrant foliage and striking flowers. In early spring, it produces abundant clusters of deep magenta flowers that cover its bare branches, creating a dramatic display before the leaves emerge. The heart-shaped leaves, which follow the flowers, are a glossy, dark green and turn a brilliant yellow in autumn, adding seasonal interest to the garden.

In the garden, Cercis Oklahoma is ideal for various styles, including woodland, cottage, and contemporary gardens. While this tree is hardy, it thrives in full sun to partial shade, preferring well-drained soils with moderate moisture levels. This redbud tree is well-suited for use as a specimen plant, in mixed borders, or as part of a woodland garden where its vibrant spring flowers can be fully appreciated.

Space the plants about 3 to 4m apart to allow their broad, spreading canopy to develop fully. Mature Cercis Oklahoma trees typically reach a height 4m and spread of about 3m.

Trimming: Prune Cercis Oklahoma after flowering in late spring. Remove dead, damaged, or diseased branches and shape the tree to maintain its structure.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support growth. Avoid over-fertilising, as this can lead to excessive foliage at the expense of flowers.

Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase, ensuring the soil remains moist but not waterlogged. Once established, water during prolonged dry periods.

Pest Control: Cercis Oklahoma is relatively pest-resistant but monitor for common pests like aphids, caterpillars, and scale. Use insecticidal soap or neem oil if infestations occur.

Disease Management: Watch for signs of canker, leaf spot, and verticillium wilt. Prune and dispose of affected branches to control the spread of disease. Ensure good air circulation and avoid overhead watering to reduce the risk of fungal infections.
