Butia capitata
Notify MeButia capitata, commonly known as the jelly palm, is a slow-growing, evergreen palm admired for its gracefully arching, blue-green fronds and stout trunk. Native to South America, it produces small, fragrant yellow flowers in late Spring to early Summer, followed by edible orange-yellow fruit with a sweet, tropical flavour.
Ideal for subtropical landscapes, feature planting, or coastal gardens, it suits Mediterranean, tropical, and architectural garden styles.
Plant in full sun with free-draining soil. Tolerant of wind, salt spray, and light frost once established. Water regularly while young, then only during extended dry periods. Allow 3–4m spacing for mature canopy spread.
Mature size: Slow-growing and stately, reaching 4–6m tall with a canopy spread of 3–4m.
Trimming: Remove old, yellowing, or damaged fronds as they appear, cutting them back to the base without damaging the trunk. Avoid removing green fronds, as this can weaken the palm and reduce growth.
Deadheading: Not necessary, but fruit stalks can be removed after fruiting if not harvested, to prevent mess and unwanted seedlings.
Fertilising: Apply a slow-release palm fertiliser in early spring and again in midsummer. Choose a formulation containing magnesium and potassium to support healthy frond development and prevent nutrient deficiencies, especially in sandy soils.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, Butia capitata is drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during hot, dry periods. Avoid waterlogged conditions by ensuring well-drained soil.
Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant. Occasionally, scale insects or spider mites may appear—treat with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap if necessary.
Disease Management: Rarely affected by disease. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot, and avoid overhead watering to minimise fungal issues. Remove dead or decaying fronds promptly to maintain plant health and appearance.
