Betula Whitespire
Notify MeBetula Whitespire is a refined birch cultivar recognised for its clean, chalky-white bark and strong, upright form. Its narrow green leaves provide a light, fluttering canopy that turns golden yellow in Autumn. Notably resistant to birch borer, this selection is both attractive and resilient.
Well-suited to contemporary, woodland, and cool-climate gardens, it serves beautifully as a specimen tree or in rows to create a light-filtering screen or avenue. Thrives in full sun and prefers moist, well-draining soil. Tolerates a range of soil types and adapts well to urban conditions. Space 4–6 metres apart to allow for full canopy development.
Mature size typically reaches 10–12 metres tall with a narrow to rounded crown spreading 4–5 metres wide.
Trimming: Prune in late winter to early spring to remove any dead, damaged, or congested branches. Light formative pruning may be done while young to develop a strong, upright structure. Avoid heavy pruning during warmer months to prevent sap loss.
Deadheading: Not applicable.
Fertilising: Use a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring during establishment or if growth is weak. Mature trees typically thrive without regular feeding when planted in fertile soil.
Watering: Provide regular watering for the first 1–2 years, particularly in dry conditions. Once established, 'Whitespire' has moderate drought tolerance but performs best with deep watering during extended dry periods.
Pest Control: Generally resistant to bronze birch borer, a key trait of this cultivar. Still, monitor for aphids and leaf miners; treat aphids with insecticidal soap or neem oil if needed.
Disease Management: May be susceptible to powdery mildew or leaf spot in humid environments. Encourage airflow, avoid overhead watering, and remove leaf litter to reduce fungal pressure. Maintain overall tree health to prevent stress-related decline.
