Betula pendula Youngii
Betula pendula Youngii is a compact, weeping form of silver birch with cascading branches that form a dome-like silhouette. Its white bark develops early, offering striking contrast to the small, serrated green leaves that turn golden yellow in Autumn, adding vibrant seasonal colour to its elegant frame.
Perfect for smaller spaces, cottage, contemporary, and woodland-style gardens, it serves as a standout specimen or focal point in mixed plantings.
Thrives in full sun and prefers well-draining soil. Adaptable to a range of conditions, including poorer soils, and tolerates dry periods once established. Space 3–5 metres apart if planting in multiples.
Mature size typically reaches 4–6 metres tall with a graceful, weeping canopy spreading 3–5 metres wide.
Trimming: Minimal pruning is needed to retain its elegant, weeping shape. Remove any dead, damaged, or rubbing branches in late winter. If desired, shape gently to lift low-hanging branches or improve form, avoiding heavy cuts.
Deadheading: Not applicable.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring if growth is slow or foliage appears pale. Well-established trees in good soil typically require little feeding.
Watering: Ensure regular watering during the first 1–2 years, especially during dry periods. Mature trees are moderately drought-tolerant but benefit from deep watering during prolonged dryness.
Pest Control: Look out for aphids on young shoots in spring and early summer; treat with insecticidal soap if necessary. Leaf miners and caterpillars may occasionally be present but seldom cause major damage.
Disease Management: Powdery mildew and leaf spot can occur in humid or poorly ventilated conditions. Encourage airflow, avoid overhead watering, and remove fallen leaves. Monitor for signs of dieback which could indicate stress or borer presence—seek advice if symptoms persist.
