Arbutus canariensis
Notify MeArbutus canariensis, or the Canary Island strawberry tree, is a rare evergreen species admired for its smooth, cinnamon-toned bark, leathery dark green leaves, and clusters of creamy white to pale pink, urn-shaped flowers. These appear in autumn and are followed by rounded, red-orange fruit that resemble strawberries. With its ornamental bark and multi-season interest, this tree brings both texture and colour to the landscape.
Ideal as a feature tree in Mediterranean, dry-climate, or low-maintenance gardens. Complements coastal, contemporary, and woodland garden styles.
Prefers full sun to light shade in well-drained, moderately fertile soil. Drought-tolerant once established and benefits from minimal pruning. Space at least 4–5 metres from other trees or structures for natural shaping.
Mature size: Typically reaches 8–12 metres tall with a broad, rounded canopy and attractive, peeling bark.
Trimming: Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches and to shape young trees. Avoid heavy pruning, as this can spoil the tree’s natural form and bark display. Minimal maintenance is needed once established.
Deadheading: Not applicable.
Fertilising: Feed with a low-phosphorus, balanced fertiliser in early spring if growth is weak or if the tree is in poor soil. In most cases, established trees require little to no feeding.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase (first 2–3 years). Once established, Arbutus canariensis is drought-tolerant but benefits from deep watering during prolonged dry periods, especially in sandy or very free-draining soils.
Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant. Occasionally, aphids or scale may appear—treat with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap if needed.
Disease Management: Root rot can occur in poorly drained soils. Ensure good drainage and avoid overwatering. Maintain a mulch ring to conserve moisture, but keep it clear of the trunk to prevent fungal issues. Leaf spot may appear in wet conditions—improve airflow and remove affected foliage if necessary.
