Araucaria araucana, commonly known as the monkey puzzle tree, is a distinctive and ancient evergreen conifer native to South America. Its striking architectural form features whorled branches covered in rigid, sharply pointed, dark green leaves. Slow-growing but long-lived, it creates a bold statement as a specimen tree, with both visual drama and historical intrigue. Cones appear on mature trees, with female trees producing large, edible seeds.
An excellent focal point for large gardens, parks, or heritage plantings. Complements formal, exotic, or arboretum-style landscapes.
Thrives in full sun and well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil. Tolerant of wind and coastal conditions but prefers consistent moisture without waterlogging. Allow at least 5–6 metres spacing from other trees or structures.
Mature size: Can reach 15–25 metres tall with a broad, pyramidal shape and horizontal branching.
Trimming: Minimal pruning is required. Remove dead or damaged lower branches in late winter or early spring if necessary, but avoid heavy pruning, as the tree does not regenerate well from old wood. Maintain the natural shape for best health and appearance.
Deadheading: Not applicable.
Fertilising: Apply a general-purpose, slow-release fertiliser in early spring, particularly for young or container-grown trees. Mature trees typically require little to no feeding if planted in fertile soil.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase (first 2–3 years), especially in dry spells. Once established, the tree is drought-tolerant but appreciates occasional deep watering during extended dry periods.
Pest Control: Rarely affected by pests. Occasionally, scale insects may appear on stressed trees—treat with horticultural oil if needed.
Disease Management: Generally disease-resistant, though root rot can occur in poorly drained soils. Ensure good drainage and avoid waterlogged conditions. Mulch to retain moisture but keep it clear of the trunk to prevent fungal issues.
