Alnus glutinosa Imperiallis

Alnus glutinosa Imperialis is a graceful, deciduous tree distinguished by its finely cut, deeply lobed green leaves that create a light, airy canopy. Its slender form and delicate foliage give it a soft, textured appearance, offering seasonal interest through both its foliage and small, woody catkins that appear from autumn into winter.

Best suited to full sun with moist, well-draining soil, Alnus glutinosa Imperialis complements woodland, parkland, and naturalistic garden styles. It tolerates wet soils and is useful near water features or damp areas. Space well to accommodate its natural open habit. At maturity, it typically grows to around 10–15 metres tall and 6–8 metres wide.

Trimming: Minimal trimming is required. Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to remove any dead, damaged, or poorly placed branches and to maintain a strong framework, taking care not to over-prune as this tree’s natural open habit is part of its charm.

Fertilising: Fertilising is generally unnecessary in good garden soils. In poorer soils, apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support vigorous growth.

Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase, particularly during dry spells. Once established, it tolerates both moist and periodically wet soils but still benefits from occasional deep watering during prolonged dry periods.

Pest Control: Alnus glutinosa 'Imperialis' is typically pest-free, though monitoring for aphids on young shoots in spring is advisable; infestations can be controlled with horticultural oil or natural insecticidal sprays if needed.

Disease Management: Generally disease-resistant, but it can be susceptible to fungal diseases such as canker or root rot if grown in poorly drained, stagnant soils. Ensure good drainage where possible and remove any affected branches promptly to prevent spread.
