Acer Skeeters Broom
Acer Skeeter's Broom is a narrow, upright maple cultivar renowned for its dense foliage and vibrant color transitions throughout the seasons. In spring, it boasts small, bright-red leaves that mature to a deep burgundy in summer, culminating in a dazzling scarlet display in autumn. Complementing its striking foliage, the plant features distinctive purple branches, adding to its visual appeal.
Ideal for spaces where a compact yet showy tree is desired, Skeeter's Broom thrives best in morning sun or semi-shaded areas, protected from strong winds to maintain its delicate leaves and overall form. As a deciduous tree, it sheds its leaves in winter but remains an attractive feature due to its cold hardiness and unique branch structure.
Grows approx. 2.5m high and 1.5m in wide.
- Trimming: Prune acers in late winter or early spring to shape and remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Avoid heavy pruning, as acers have a natural, graceful form.
- Fertilising: Apply a slow-release fertiliser formulated for trees and shrubs in spring. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilisers, which may encourage excessive foliage growth at the expense of the plant's natural form.
- Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase and in dry periods, ensuring the soil remains consistently moist but not waterlogged. Mulch around the base to retain moisture.
- Pest Control: Look out for aphids and scale insects. Remove them by hand, use insecticidal soap, or introduce natural predators like ladybirds.
- Disease Management: Watch for verticillium wilt, indicated by wilting leaves and branch dieback. Remove affected branches promptly and dispose of them away from healthy plants. Improve soil drainage to reduce risks.
