Acer Fireglow

Acer palmatum Fireglow has vibrant and luminous foliage, which seems to glow with fire, hence its name. The leaves emerge a vivid red in spring and sustain this fiery hue throughout the summer, a notable trait as it remains vibrant even under full sun, unlike other red Japanese maples that might fade. As autumn approaches, the leaves deepen to a rich crimson, providing a striking visual spectacle.

Ideal for a variety of garden styles, from modern to traditional landscapes, Fireglow thrives in full sun to partial shade. It prefers moist, well-drained soil with a slightly acidic pH. Its resilience against sunburn and ability to maintain colour make it particularly valuable for areas exposed to intense sunlight. The tree's upright growth habit and moderate size make it an excellent choice for gardeners wishing to add a dramatic touch without overwhelming the space.

Acer palmatum Fireglow reaches a mature height of about 3 to 4 metres with a spread of about 2.5 to 3 metres. Its compact form and stunning colouration make it a standout addition to any garden, offering year-round visual interest.

Trimming: Prune in late autumn or winter when the tree is dormant, removing dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Avoid heavy pruning to preserve the natural shape, particularly for ornamental varieties like Japanese maples.

Fertilising: Apply a slow-release fertiliser formulated for trees or a balanced fertiliser in early spring. Avoid over-fertilising, which can cause leggy growth.

Watering: Keep soil consistently moist during the establishment phase and during dry spells, especially for shallow-rooted varieties like Japanese maples. Use mulch to retain moisture.

Pest Control: Monitor for aphids, scale insects, and caterpillars. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil.

Disease Management: Watch for signs of verticillium wilt (wilting and yellowing leaves) and leaf spot diseases. Remove affected branches and ensure good drainage. Dispose of infected material to prevent the spread of disease.
