Acacia pravissima

Acacia pravissima, commonly known as the Ovens Wattle or Wedge-leaved Wattle, is a hardy evergreen tree or large shrub, prized for its unique triangular, grey-green foliage and cascading, arching branches. In late winter to early spring, it is smothered in bright golden-yellow, spherical flower clusters, creating a spectacular display that attracts pollinators. Its weeping habit and vibrant flowers make it a popular choice for both ornamental and functional planting.

Perfect as a feature tree, screening plant, or in mixed borders in native, Mediterranean, or wildlife-friendly gardens. It thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, tolerating both sandy and clay soils, and is drought-tolerant once established. Space plants 3–4 metres apart when planting as a screen.

At maturity, Acacia pravissima reaches a height of 3–6 metres and a width of 2–4 metres, forming a softly cascading, triangular shape. Minimal pruning is needed, though it can be lightly trimmed after flowering to maintain its form. A low-maintenance and visually striking choice for year-round interest.

Trimming: Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and encourage dense growth. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches to support healthy development. For hedging or screening, trim as needed to control size.

Fertilising: Use a low-phosphorus fertiliser designed for native plants in spring if growth appears weak. Acacia pravissima thrives in poor soils and generally requires minimal feeding.

Watering: Water deeply during the establishment phase and in extended dry periods. Once established, it is drought-tolerant and requires little additional watering.

Pest Control: Monitor for psyllids and scale insects, which can occasionally affect Acacias. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or horticultural oils.

Disease Management: Ensure the soil is well-draining to prevent root rot, a common issue in overly wet conditions. Acacia pravissima is generally disease-resistant but benefits from good airflow to reduce the risk of fungal problems. Remove affected foliage if necessary.
