Acacia floribunda, commonly known as the Gossamer or Sallow Wattle, is a graceful evergreen tree with slender, arching branches and narrow, bright green foliage. From late winter through to spring, it produces masses of creamy-yellow, lightly fragrant flower clusters, creating a soft and delicate display. Fast-growing and hardy, it is an excellent choice for adding height and texture to the garden.
Perfect as a screen, windbreak, or feature tree in native, Mediterranean, or wildlife-friendly gardens. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and tolerates a wide range of soils, including sandy and clay soils, as long as they are well-drained. Acacia floribunda is drought-tolerant once established and is ideal for erosion control on slopes. Space trees approximately 3–5 metres apart for optimal growth.
At maturity, this versatile tree reaches 4–8 metres in height and 3–4 metres in width, forming a naturally weeping, elegant shape. Minimal pruning is required, though shaping after flowering can help maintain a tidy form. Its flowers are highly attractive to bees and other pollinators.
Trimming: Prune lightly after flowering to maintain a neat shape and encourage dense growth. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches to improve airflow and overall plant health.
Deadheading: Not required, as spent flowers fall naturally. Removing seed pods, however, can help minimise unwanted self-seeding.
Fertilising: Apply a low-phosphorus fertiliser suitable for native plants in spring if needed. Acacia floribunda generally thrives in nutrient-poor soils and requires minimal feeding.
Watering: Water deeply during the establishment phase and in prolonged dry periods. Once established, this species is drought-tolerant and needs little additional watering.
Pest Control: Monitor for common pests like psyllids or scale insects, which can occasionally infest Acacias. Treat promptly with horticultural oils or insecticidal soaps.
Disease Management: Ensure well-draining soil to prevent root rot. Acacia floribunda is generally disease-resistant but may suffer from fungal issues in overly wet or poorly ventilated conditions. Prune for better airflow and remove affected foliage if needed.
