Rhododendron Vireya Vladimir Bukovsky is an eye-catching evergreen shrub featuring clusters of deep red, trumpet-shaped flowers that appear from late spring to autumn. Its bold colouring and compact habit make it well suited to subtropical gardens, shaded borders, and large containers.
Plant in partial shade with free-draining, acidic soil rich in organic matter. Keep soil evenly moist and protect from frost and harsh sun. Mulch to retain moisture and prune lightly after flowering to encourage a tidy form. Space plants 80 centimetres to 1 metre apart for grouped or feature planting.
Reaches approximately 1 to 1.2 metres tall and 1 metre wide.
Trimming: Lightly prune after flowering to maintain a balanced shape and encourage denser growth. Avoid cutting into older wood, as vireyas flower on mature stems.
Deadheading: Remove spent flower trusses above the first set of leaves to support repeat flowering and maintain a tidy appearance.
Fertilising: Apply a fertiliser for acid-loving plants in early spring and again in late summer. Avoid high-phosphorus products, which can harm the roots.
Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist but well drained. Water regularly during establishment and in dry weather. Ensure the plant is not sitting in water to prevent root problems.
Pest Control: Monitor for aphids, thrips, and scale on soft new growth and buds. Use insecticidal soap or horticultural oil if pests are present.
Disease Management: Root rot can occur in poorly drained soils. Use an acidic, free-draining mix and avoid overwatering. Remove any discoloured or damaged foliage and ensure good airflow to minimise fungal issues.
