Vireya Tropical Glow
Vireya Tropical Glow is a compact, evergreen rhododendron variety producing vibrant coral-pink to orange-toned flowers in clusters from late spring through to autumn. Its bright colouring and tidy habit make it well suited to subtropical gardens, shaded borders, or large containers.
Plant in partial shade with free-draining, acidic soil rich in organic matter. Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Protect from frost and strong afternoon sun. Mulch annually and prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape. Space plants 80 centimetres to 1 metre apart for grouped planting.
Grows to around 1 to 1.2 metres tall and 1 metre wide.
Trimming: Lightly prune after flowering to shape the plant and encourage bushier growth. Avoid cutting into older wood, as vireyas flower on mature stems.
Deadheading: Remove spent flower trusses just above the first set of leaves to support further flowering and keep the plant tidy.
Fertilising: Use a slow-release fertiliser formulated for acid-loving plants in early spring and again in late summer. Avoid high-phosphorus fertilisers, which can damage sensitive roots.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment and throughout dry periods. Keep soil consistently moist but well drained to prevent waterlogging.
Pest Control: Monitor for aphids, thrips, and scale on new growth and buds. Treat with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil if necessary.
Disease Management: Ensure excellent drainage to prevent root rot. Use an acidic, free-draining mix and avoid overwatering. Remove any discoloured or spotted foliage and provide good airflow to reduce fungal issues.
