Vireya Thalia
Notify MeRhododendron Vireya Thalia is a compact evergreen shrub producing clusters of soft apricot to peach-toned flowers from late spring through to autumn. With its tropical appearance and lush green foliage, it adds gentle colour and structure to subtropical borders, shaded garden areas, or containers.
Plant in partial shade with free-draining, acidic soil enriched with organic matter. Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Protect from frost and strong afternoon sun. Mulch well and prune lightly after flowering to maintain a tidy shape. Space plants 80 centimetres to 1 metre apart for grouped or layered planting.
Grows to about 1 to 1.2 metres tall and 1 metre wide.
Trimming: Lightly trim after flowering to maintain shape and encourage compact growth. Avoid heavy pruning, as vireyas produce flowers on older wood.
Deadheading: Remove spent flower clusters just above the first set of leaves to encourage further flowering and prevent seed formation.
Fertilising: Feed with a fertiliser formulated for acid-loving plants in early spring and again in late summer. Avoid fertilisers high in phosphorus, which can damage roots.
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but free-draining. Water regularly during establishment and in dry periods. Avoid waterlogging to prevent root issues.
Pest Control: Watch for aphids, thrips, and scale on new growth. Treat with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil if infestations occur.
Disease Management: Ensure excellent drainage to prevent root rot, a common issue in vireyas. Use an acidic, open mix and avoid overwatering. Remove any yellow or spotted leaves promptly and provide good airflow around the plant.
