Vireya Scarlet Queen
Notify MeRhododendron Vireya Scarlet Queen is a tropical rhododendron with vibrant scarlet-red flowers that appear in clusters from late spring through to autumn. Its glossy green foliage and compact habit make it a colourful choice for subtropical gardens, containers, or shaded borders.
Plant in partial shade with free-draining, acidic soil rich in organic matter. Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Protect from frost and harsh afternoon sun. Space plants 80 centimetres to 1 metre apart for grouped planting or as a feature in a shaded spot.
Grows to approximately 1.2 metres tall and 1 metre wide.
Trimming: Lightly prune after flowering to maintain a compact shape and remove any leggy or damaged growth. Avoid heavy pruning, as vireyas flower on older wood.
Deadheading: Remove spent flower clusters by snapping them off just above the first set of leaves to encourage fresh flowering and prevent seed development.
Fertilising: Apply an acid-loving slow-release fertiliser in early spring and again in late summer. Avoid high-phosphorus fertilisers, as vireyas are sensitive to it.
Watering: Keep soil consistently moist but well drained. Water regularly during establishment and during dry periods, especially in warmer months. Avoid waterlogging.
Pest Control: Check for thrips, aphids, and scale on new growth and buds. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil.
Disease Management: Watch for root rot in poorly drained soils. Use a free-draining, acidic mix and avoid overwatering. Remove any yellowing or spotted leaves promptly. Good airflow helps prevent fungal problems.
