Vireya Popcorn
Rhododendron Vireya Popcorn is a compact, evergreen tropical rhododendron prized for its clusters of soft, creamy white flowers with a hint of yellow at the throat. Flowering mainly in spring and often again in autumn, this variety provides a delicate contrast against its glossy dark green foliage, bringing a bright, fresh look to shaded areas.
Ideal for subtropical, woodland, and container gardens, Rhododendron Vireya Popcorn is perfect for sheltered borders, patio planters, or understorey planting beneath trees. It thrives in part shade with free-draining, slightly acidic soil enriched with organic matter and appreciates consistent moisture without becoming waterlogged. Space approximately 80 cm to 1 metre apart for group plantings.
Forms a rounded, compact shrub reaching around 1 to 1.2 metres high and wide.
Trimming: Prune lightly after flowering to shape the plant and encourage compact, bushy growth. Remove any dead, damaged or overly leggy branches. Avoid cutting into old wood, as it may not reshoot readily.
Deadheading: Recommended. Gently remove spent flower clusters to improve appearance and encourage repeat flowering.
Fertilising: Use a fertiliser formulated for acid-loving plants in early spring and again after flowering. In containers or poor soils, supplement with a liquid feed every 4 to 6 weeks during the growing season to support healthy growth and vibrant flowering.
Watering: Water regularly, keeping the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Vireyas prefer slightly acidic, free-draining soil. Mulch lightly to help retain moisture and protect shallow roots.
Pest Control: Check regularly for aphids, thrips and mites, especially on young shoots. Treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap if infestations occur.
Disease Management: Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot. Avoid overhead watering and maintain airflow around the plant to reduce the risk of fungal diseases such as leaf spot. Remove any discoloured or damaged foliage promptly.
