Vireya Just Peachy is a compact evergreen vireya rhododendron grown for its satiny apricot flowers. The blooms carry a warm peach-apricot tone and appear in soft, rounded trusses. Vireyas can flower more than once a year, making this a rewarding shrub for a sheltered spot. Mature size is typically 1 to 1.5m high and wide.
This vireya suits a cottage garden, a subtropical-style planting, or a sheltered courtyard border. Use it as a feature shrub in a container on a deck, or plant in groups under a light tree canopy. The soft apricot tones pair well with cream or coral tones, or with deeper reds and pinks for contrast.
Grow Just Peachy in dappled light or part shade, sheltered from strong wind. It needs free-draining, acidic soil rich in organic matter. A coarse, open mix similar to an orchid blend works well in pots. Mulch the root zone to keep moisture steady and roots cool.
This vireya is frost-tender and is not suited to frost-prone inland areas such as Central Otago or inland Southland without reliable shelter. Trim lightly after each flush of flowers to keep a tidy shape. Like all vireyas and rhododendrons, this plant is toxic to cats, dogs, and horses if eaten.
Trimming: Trim lightly after each flush of flowers to keep the plant compact and encourage the next round of buds. Vireyas respond well to light shaping but avoid cutting into old bare wood. Remove any dead or crossing stems as you notice them.
Deadheading: Deadheading is not essential. Removing spent trusses by hand tidies the plant and can encourage new growth, but leaving them does no harm.
Fertilising: Feed with a fertiliser formulated for azaleas, camellias, and rhododendrons in early spring and again after the main flowering flush. Keep feeds light, as vireyas have fine, shallow roots that are easily overwhelmed.
Watering: Keep the soil or potting mix evenly moist but never waterlogged. Water regularly through warm, dry spells. In containers, check moisture levels often as pots dry out faster than garden beds. Mulch helps retain moisture in the ground.
Pest Control: Watch for aphids, thrips, two-spotted mite, and scale insects. Check the undersides of leaves regularly and treat early with horticultural oil or a suitable spray to prevent populations from building up.
Disease Management: Free-draining soil and good airflow prevent most problems. Wet or heavy soil invites Phytophthora root rot, which is the main risk for vireyas. Petal blight can occur in humid conditions; remove and bin affected flowers rather than composting them. Clear fallen leaves and spent flowers to reduce fungal risk.
