Vireya Hugh Redgrove

Vireya Hugh Redgrove is a compact evergreen vireya rhododendron grown for its clusters of tubular flowers and attractive glossy foliage. The blooms appear in flushes through the warmer months, with plants often flowering more than once a year. This vireya holds a tidy, rounded habit and typically reaches 1 to 1.5m high and wide at maturity, making it a manageable size for most gardens.

This vireya suits a subtropical garden, a sheltered courtyard planting, or a modern minimalist border where year-round foliage is valued. It works well massed in a sheltered bed or grown as a container specimen on a covered deck or patio. Pair it with other vireyas and shade-tolerant plants to build a layered, tropical-feel display.

Grow Hugh Redgrove in dappled light or part shade, sheltered from strong wind. It needs free-draining, acidic, organic-rich soil. A mix containing bark and pumice suits it well. Avoid heavy or waterlogged ground, which quickly causes root problems.

This vireya is frost-tender and is not suited to frost-prone inland areas such as Central Otago or inland Southland without reliable protection. Feed with an azalea and rhododendron fertiliser in spring and again in early summer. Like all vireyas and rhododendrons, Hugh Redgrove is toxic to cats, dogs, and horses if eaten.

Trimming: Trim lightly after each flowering flush to keep the plant compact and encourage the next round of growth. Vireyas respond well to light shaping but avoid cutting back into old bare wood. Remove any dead or damaged stems as you go.

Deadheading: Deadheading is not essential. Removing spent flower clusters by hand can tidy the plant and may encourage the next flush, but leaving them does no harm.

Fertilising: Feed with a fertiliser formulated for azaleas, camellias, and rhododendrons. Apply in spring and again in early summer to support flowering and new growth. Avoid high-phosphorus general fertilisers and do not over-feed.

Watering: Keep the growing medium consistently moist but never waterlogged. Vireyas in containers dry out faster than those in the ground, so check regularly through summer. Mulch in-ground plants to retain moisture and keep roots cool.

Pest Control: Watch for aphids, thrips, two-spotted mite, and scale, particularly on new growth and the undersides of leaves. Treat early with a suitable insecticide or horticultural oil to prevent populations from building up.

Disease Management: Free-draining soil and good airflow are the main defences. Wet or heavy soil invites Phytophthora root rot, which is the most common cause of vireya decline. Petal blight can occur in humid conditions; remove and bin affected flowers and avoid overhead watering. Clear fallen leaves and spent blooms regularly.
