Trimming: Trim lightly after flowering to remove dead, damaged, or untidy growth and to maintain a compact shape. Vireya rhododendrons are best pruned soon after flowering so they can put on fresh growth and set future buds without disruption.

Deadheading: Remove spent flower trusses if you want to keep the plant tidy and direct energy into new growth. Deadheading is helpful, but it is not always essential on smaller-leaved rhododendrons if seed set is not a concern.

Fertilising: Feed in spring with a fertiliser for acid-loving plants, and avoid overfeeding. A light hand is best, as steady nutrition supports healthy growth and flowering without stressing the plant.

Watering: Water regularly during establishment and keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. In dry, hot weather it may need more frequent watering, while in cooler months watering should be reduced slightly.

Pest control: Check regularly for sap-sucking pests such as scale, thrips, or mites, particularly if foliage looks marked or growth seems weak. Treat early with a suitable horticultural control and keep the plant healthy to reduce stress-related pest issues.

Disease management: The main issue to watch for is root rot in poorly drained or overly wet conditions. Signs include yellowing leaves, wilting, and stunted growth, so ensure excellent drainage and avoid overwatering. Nutrient deficiencies can also affect performance if the growing conditions are not suitable.
