Rhododendron Vireya Coral Flare is a compact, evergreen variety admired for its clusters of soft coral-pink, trumpet-shaped flowers that appear mainly in spring and can repeat in autumn under ideal conditions. The warm, rosy tones of the flowers complement the glossy green foliage, creating a gentle yet vibrant display in subtropical and shaded gardens.
Ideal for subtropical, woodland, and container gardens, Rhododendron Vireya Coral Flare is perfect for sheltered borders, patio pots, or planting beneath trees. It thrives in part shade with free-draining, slightly acidic soil rich in organic matter and appreciates consistent moisture without waterlogging. Space approximately 80 cm to 1 metre apart for grouped planting.
Forms a rounded, compact shrub reaching around 1 to 1.2 metres high and wide.
Trimming: Prune lightly after flowering to maintain a compact, tidy shape and encourage bushier growth. Remove any dead, leggy or damaged branches. Avoid heavy pruning, as Vireyas can be slow to reshoot from old wood.
Deadheading: Recommended. Gently remove spent flower clusters to promote further flowering and keep the plant looking neat.
Fertilising: Feed with a fertiliser suitable for acid-loving plants in early spring and again after flowering. In poor soils or containers, apply a liquid feed every 4 to 6 weeks during the growing season to support strong growth and vibrant flowers.
Watering: Keep soil evenly moist but not soggy. Vireyas prefer free-draining, slightly acidic soil. Water more frequently during dry spells and reduce in winter. Mulch lightly to retain moisture and protect shallow roots.
Pest Control: Monitor for aphids, thrips and mites, particularly on young growth and flower buds. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil if needed.
Disease Management: Root rot can occur if soil is poorly drained. Use a coarse, well-draining mix and avoid overwatering. Ensure good airflow and remove any yellowing or damaged leaves to prevent fungal issues such as leaf spot.
