Vireya Cherry Glow
Rhododendron Cherry Glow, a stunning vireya variety, is prized for its clusters of tubular, cherry-red flowers that are on show throughout the year, with peak flowering in spring and summer. Its glossy, dark green foliage provides a beautiful backdrop to the vibrant flowers, making it a striking addition to any garden. This compact, evergreen shrub is well-suited to both pots and garden beds, adding a tropical touch to your outdoor space.
Ideal for tropical, subtropical, or woodland gardens, Rhododendron Cherry Glow thrives in a sheltered location with dappled light or morning sun. It prefers acidic, well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter and should be kept evenly moist but not waterlogged. Plant with a spacing of 50–70 cm for group plantings or in a container with sufficient room for root growth.
This compact shrub typically grows to a mature height of 1–1.5 metres and a width of 1 metre, maintaining a neat, bushy shape that requires minimal pruning.
Trimming: Lightly prune after flowering to remove spent blooms and maintain a compact shape. Avoid heavy pruning, as Vireyas are slow to regenerate from old wood.
Deadheading: Remove spent flowers promptly to encourage further flowering and prevent seed formation.
Fertilising: Feed with a fertiliser formulated for acid-loving plants in spring and summer. Avoid over-fertilising, as this can damage the roots.
Watering: Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Use rainwater if possible, as Vireyas prefer low-mineral water. Allow the top layer of soil to dry slightly between waterings.
Pest Control: Monitor for common pests like lace bugs or aphids. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil.
Disease Management: Ensure well-draining soil and avoid overhead watering to prevent fungal diseases such as powdery mildew or root rot. Remove any affected leaves promptly.
