Viburnum opulus Notcutt's Variety
Notify MeViburnum opulus Notcutt’s Variety is a striking deciduous shrub admired for its large, rounded clusters of pure white flowers that appear in late spring, creating a beautiful snowball effect. In autumn, the dark green, lobed foliage turns shades of red and orange, while bright red berries provide additional seasonal interest and attract birds.
Ideal for cottage, woodland, and formal gardens, Viburnum opulus Notcutt’s Variety is perfect for borders, screening, or as a feature shrub. It thrives in full sun to part shade with moist, free-draining soil and benefits from regular watering during dry periods. Space approximately 1.5 to 2 metres apart for hedging or group planting.
Forms a rounded, bushy shrub reaching around 2.5 to 3 metres high and 2 to 2.5 metres wide.
Trimming: Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and encourage bushy growth. Remove any dead, damaged or crossing branches. Older plants can be rejuvenated by thinning out one or two of the oldest stems at the base in late winter.
Deadheading: Recommended. Remove spent flower heads after flowering to improve appearance and help redirect energy into growth and berry production.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring. In poorer soils, use a liquid feed every 6 to 8 weeks during the growing season to support healthy foliage and flowering.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase. Once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant but performs best with consistent moisture, particularly in dry spells. Ensure the soil is moist but well-draining.
Pest Control: Monitor for aphids, viburnum beetle and scale. Aphids may cause leaf curling, while viburnum beetle larvae can skeletonise leaves. Treat infestations early with neem oil or insecticidal soap.
Disease Management: Powdery mildew and leaf spot may occur in humid conditions. Improve airflow around the plant and avoid overhead watering. Remove affected foliage promptly and dispose of it to reduce spread. Ensure soil drains freely to avoid root problems.
