Spiraea japonica Anthony Waterer is a compact, deciduous shrub with deep green foliage that takes on reddish tones in autumn. From late spring through to summer, it produces flat clusters of rosy-pink flowers, attracting pollinators and adding soft colour to borders, cottage gardens, and low hedging.
Plant in full sun to light shade with free-draining soil. Tolerates light frost and dry conditions once established. Prune back in late winter to promote fresh growth and better flowering. Space plants 60 to 80 centimetres apart for dense planting or informal hedging.
Grows to around 80 to 100 centimetres tall and wide.
Trimming: Prune lightly after flowering to maintain a compact shape and encourage a second flush of flowers. In late winter or early spring, cut back the plant by up to one-third to promote vigorous new growth.
Deadheading: Remove spent flower clusters to prolong the flowering season and keep the plant looking tidy.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring. In poorer soils, a second light feed in mid-summer can support continued growth and flowering.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant but benefits from deep watering during extended dry periods.
Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant. Occasionally check for aphids on new growth and treat with insecticidal soap if needed.
Disease Management: Watch for powdery mildew or leaf spot in humid conditions. Ensure good airflow, avoid overhead watering, and remove any affected foliage to reduce spread. Use well-drained soil to prevent root issues.
