Rhododendron Old Copper
Notify MeRhododendron 'Old Copper' is a striking, evergreen shrub prized for its vibrant copper-orange flower trusses that appear in mid to late spring. The large, trumpet-shaped flowers are held above dense, dark green foliage, offering a bold splash of colour and year-round structure. With a rounded, upright habit reaching around 1.5-2 metres high and wide, it makes a standout feature in cottage, woodland, and acid-loving garden styles.
Plant in partial shade with moist, free-draining, acidic soil rich in organic matter. Space plants 1.2-1.5 metres apart to allow for mature spread and good airflow. Mulch annually to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Water regularly during dry periods, especially in summer. Lightly prune after flowering to maintain shape if necessary. Shelter from strong winds and avoid deep shade to promote flowering.
Trimming: Lightly prune after flowering to maintain a balanced shape and remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Avoid hard pruning into old wood, as rhododendrons respond poorly to severe cuts.
Deadheading: Gently remove spent flower trusses after flowering to tidy the plant and encourage strong new growth. Snap them off just above the developing shoots.
Fertilising: Apply a fertiliser for acid-loving plants in early spring. A light top-up after flowering can support healthy foliage and bud development. Avoid alkaline or lime-based products.
Watering: Water regularly during dry spells and while establishing. Rhododendron ‘Old Copper’ prefers moist, free-draining, acidic soil. Use an organic mulch like pine bark or leaf litter to retain moisture and protect shallow roots.
Pest Control: Check for vine weevils (especially in pots), lace bugs, and aphids. Use insecticidal soap, neem oil, or biological controls as needed.
Disease Management: Maintain good airflow to prevent fungal issues such as powdery mildew or root rot. Avoid overhead watering, and remove any diseased foliage promptly. Ensure soil remains well-drained to reduce the risk of Phytophthora root rot.
