Rhododendron Cunninghams White
Rhododendron 'Cunningham's White' is a hardy, evergreen shrub renowned for its abundant trusses of pure white flowers, each subtly marked with a pale yellow throat. Blooming in mid to late spring, the floral display contrasts beautifully with the dense, dark green foliage. It’s an excellent choice for hedging, woodland plantings, or as a specimen shrub in cottage, formal, or acid-loving garden styles. With a rounded, bushy habit, it typically reaches 1.5-2 metres high and wide.
Plant in partial shade with free-draining, acidic, humus-rich soil. Space plants 1.2-1.5 metres apart for hedging or grouped plantings. Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, and mulch annually to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape if needed. Hardy and reliable, this variety also tolerates a degree of sun and cold better than many other rhododendrons.
Trimming: Lightly prune after flowering to maintain shape and remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Avoid heavy pruning, but older plants can be rejuvenated with careful thinning cuts over several seasons.
Deadheading: Remove spent flower clusters (trusses) after flowering by snapping them off just above the new growth. This improves appearance and helps redirect energy into healthy leaf and bud development.
Fertilising: Feed in early spring with a fertiliser formulated for acid-loving plants. A second, lighter feed after flowering can support ongoing vigour. Avoid lime-based products.
Watering: Water regularly during dry periods, particularly while buds are forming and during flowering. Rhododendrons prefer consistently moist, well-drained, acidic soil. Mulch annually with pine bark or composted leaf litter to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant, but watch for vine weevils (especially in containers), lace bugs, or aphids. Treat with appropriate insecticides or biological controls if needed.
Disease Management: Ensure good air circulation to reduce risk of fungal issues such as powdery mildew or root rot. Avoid planting in poorly drained soil and remove any diseased or damaged foliage promptly. Use mulch to protect surface roots from drying out or freezing.
