Pimelea ferruginea Bonne Petite

Pimelea ferruginea Bonne Petite is a compact Australian native shrub grown for its rounded heads of cerise-pink to magenta-pink flowers. The blooms appear from late winter through spring, covering the plant in colour over a long display period. Bonne Petite stays small, typically reaching around 0.6 to 0.9m high and wide, which makes it easy to place in a range of garden settings.

This pimelea suits a coastal garden, a native-inspired planting, or a low-water modern border. It works well massed along a path or garden edge, where the even, rounded form creates a tidy ribbon of colour. It also fits neatly into a rockery or a mixed shrub bed alongside other fine-textured plants.

Grow Bonne Petite in full sun or very light shade. It needs free-draining soil and dislikes wet or heavy ground. Sandy or gravelly soils suit it well. Good airflow around the plant keeps it healthy and reduces stress. It tolerates coastal exposure and dry conditions once established.

Trim lightly after flowering to keep the shape tidy. Avoid heavy feeding, as this shrub prefers lean soil. Pet toxicity for Pimelea ferruginea is not clearly established. As a precaution, discourage pets from chewing this plant, and this entry has been flagged for further review.

Trimming: Trim lightly after the main flush of flowers in late spring to keep Bonne Petite compact and well shaped. Do not cut back hard into old wood, as pimelea can be slow to recover from heavy pruning. Remove any dead or untidy stems as needed.

Deadheading: Deadheading is not essential. You can remove spent flower heads to tidy the plant, but leaving them in place does no harm and the plant will move on naturally.

Fertilising: Pimelea prefers lean, low-nutrient soil and does not need regular feeding. If growth looks poor, apply a small amount of low-phosphorus native plant fertiliser in spring. Avoid rich or high-nitrogen feeds.

Watering: Water regularly through the first season to help the plant establish. Once settled, Bonne Petite is reasonably drought-tolerant. Water during long dry spells in summer, but avoid keeping the root zone constantly wet.

Pest Control: Pimelea is generally trouble-free. Check occasionally for scale insects and aphids, particularly on new growth. Treat early with horticultural oil or a suitable spray if numbers build.

Disease Management: Free-draining soil and good airflow are the main defences against disease. Wet or compacted soil invites Phytophthora root rot, which is the most serious risk for this plant. Avoid overwatering and do not mulch heavily against the stem.
