This compact, rounded shrub reaches a mature size of 1.5 metres in height and width within 7-10 years. It features ovate, toothed, dark green leaves that provide an attractive backdrop for its clusters of fragrant, pure white double flowers, which appear from early summer.
Mock Orange plants are famed for their strong yet sweet scent, reminiscent of orange blossom, which can fill a garden with a delicious aroma. The Frosty Morn variety doubles this pleasure with its stunning double flowers that stand out magnificently against the dark foliage. This hardy shrub is ideal for growing in a large container, making it a versatile choice for various garden settings, including coastal gardens, beds and borders, and woodland gardens.
Philadelphus Frosty Morn appreciates a side dressing of lime once a year, best applied just before spring to promote healthy growth. It thrives in any moderately fertile, well-drained, or moist but well-drained soil in sun or partial shade. Regular pruning after flowering, cutting back within a few centimetres of the old wood, will help maintain its shape and encourage vigorous flowering.
Trimming: Prune immediately after flowering, cutting back old wood to promote new growth and maintain a desirable shape. Remove any dead or damaged branches.
Deadheading: Deadheading is generally unnecessary, but you can remove spent flowers to tidy up the plant.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring to support growth and flowering. Follow up with a second feeding after flowering.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase and in prolonged dry periods. Ensure the soil is well-drained but consistently moist.
Pest Control: Look out for aphids and scale insects. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
Disease Management: Philadelphus coronarius is relatively disease-resistant but monitor for powdery mildew. Ensure good air circulation and avoid overhead watering to prevent fungal.
