Osmanthus heterophyllus

Osmanthus heterophyllus, commonly known as Holly Osmanthus or False Holly, is an attractive evergreen shrub known for its glossy, spiny foliage and highly fragrant autumn flowers. Clusters of small, white flowers release a sweet scent, often followed by dark blue to black berries. Its lush, holly-like leaves provide year-round interest and make it an excellent structural plant in the garden.

Ideal as a hedge, screen, or specimen plant, it suits formal, cottage, and woodland gardens. Its fragrance makes it a great choice near patios and walkways, while its tolerance to urban pollution makes it well-suited for city gardens. Thrives in full sun to partial shade in well-drained, fertile soil. Space plants 1.5 to 2m apart for optimal growth. Reaches a mature height of 3–4m with a spread of 2–3m, offering privacy, structure, and year-round beauty.

Trimming: Prune in late winter or early spring to shape the plant and remove any dead or damaged branches. Use clean, sharp pruning shears to encourage healthy new growth.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring. Repeat in midsummer if the soil is poor. Avoid over-fertilising, as this can lead to excessive growth.

Watering: Water regularly during the first year to establish a strong root system. Once established, it is drought-tolerant but will benefit from deep watering during prolonged dry spells.

Pest Control: This plant is generally pest-resistant. However, keep an eye out for scale insects and spider mites. Treat infestations with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap.

Disease Management: Osmanthus heterophyllus is typically disease-resistant. To prevent fungal infections, ensure good air circulation and avoid overhead watering. If powdery mildew or other fungal issues occur, remove affected foliage and treat with a fungicide as needed.
