Nandina domestica Blush is a compact, evergreen shrub admired for its fine-textured foliage that shifts from soft green to rich shades of red and pink, especially in cooler weather. Unlike traditional forms, it produces vibrant colour year-round without flowering or setting seed, making it a tidy and non-invasive choice for modern landscapes.
Ideal for contemporary, low-maintenance, and courtyard gardens, Nandina Blush is perfect for borders, mass planting, or container use. It thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers free-draining soil. Drought-tolerant once established. Space approximately 40 to 60 cm apart for group plantings or edging.
Forms a compact, mounded shrub reaching around 60 to 80 cm high and wide.
Trimming: Trim lightly in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and encourage fresh, compact growth. Remove any leggy, dead or damaged stems at the base to keep the plant tidy and well-formed.
Deadheading: Not necessary, but you can remove spent flower clusters or berries if desired for appearance or to reduce self-seeding.
Fertilising: Apply a slow-release, balanced fertiliser in early spring. In poorer soils, supplement with a liquid feed every 6 to 8 weeks during the growing season to support vibrant foliage colour.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase. Once established, it is tolerant of dry conditions but benefits from occasional deep watering during extended dry spells, particularly in summer.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free. Occasionally, aphids may appear on new growth. Treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil if needed.
Disease Management: Rarely affected by disease. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot and remove any yellowing or diseased foliage to maintain plant health. Allow space between plants for airflow to minimise fungal issues.
