Michelia Inspiration
Michelia Inspiration is a compact, evergreen magnolia hybrid valued for its profusion of richly fragrant, creamy white to pale ivory flowers flushed with soft pink or mauve tones. These starry, cup-shaped flowers appear in late winter through early spring, standing out against the plant’s deep green, glossy foliage. Its tidy, upright form and dense growth make it ideal for smaller gardens or structured plantings.
Perfect for subtropical, formal, cottage, or woodland garden designs, Inspiration works well as a feature tree, screening plant, or fragrant hedge. Its scent and floral display are best appreciated near entrances, pathways, or outdoor seating areas.
Plant in full sun to partial shade with well-drained, fertile soil. Shelter from cold winds and protect early flowers from late frosts. Water regularly during dry spells to encourage healthy growth and flowering. Allow 2-3 metres spacing for hedging or specimen use.
Reaches approximately 3-4 metres tall and 2-2.5 metres wide at maturity, forming a dense, upright shrub or small tree with reliable flowering and year-round foliage appeal.
Trimming: Prune lightly after flowering to shape and remove any dead, damaged, or congested branches. Avoid cutting into mature wood unless necessary, as this may reduce flowering the following season.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. Enrich the soil annually with compost or well-rotted organic matter to support healthy growth and flowering.
Watering: Water deeply during dry periods, especially while establishing. Once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant but performs best with consistent moisture during the warmer months.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free. Occasionally, scale insects or aphids may appear—monitor young shoots and treat with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap if necessary.
Disease Management: Typically trouble-free. Avoid waterlogged conditions to prevent root rot, and maintain good airflow around the plant to minimise the risk of fungal issues such as leaf spot.
