Michelia Bubbles
Michelia Bubbles is a beautiful, fragrant shrub with large, waxy flowers that bloom in the spring and summer. The blooms are white with a yellow centre and have a sweet, citrusy scent. The foliage is glossy and dark green. Michelia Bubbles is a great addition to any garden and is often used as a hedge or as a specimen plant. It is easy to care for and can tolerate a range of soil and light conditions. It is an evergreen plant, which means it will retain its leaves all year round. It can also be grown in pots. 4m x 3m.
Trimming: Lightly trim Michelia ‘Bubbles’ after flowering to maintain shape and remove any crossing, damaged, or untidy growth. Avoid heavy pruning unless needed, as it naturally forms an attractive, bushy shrub or small tree.
Deadheading: Deadheading is not usually required, as spent flowers generally fall away naturally. Remove old flowers only if needed to keep the plant looking tidy.
Fertilising: Feed in spring with a slow-release fertiliser suitable for acid-loving plants to support healthy foliage and strong flowering. Applying mulch around the root zone can also help retain moisture and improve soil condition.
Watering: Water regularly while establishing, especially through the first summer. Once established, Michelia ‘Bubbles’ prefers consistent moisture and will benefit from deep watering during extended dry periods or extreme heat.
Pest Control: Check occasionally for scale, aphids, and thrips, especially on new growth and flower buds. Signs include sticky residue, distorted growth, or small insects on leaves and stems. Treat with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap if needed.
Disease Management: Watch for leaf spot, root rot, and sooty mould, particularly in humid, damp, or poorly drained conditions. Remove affected leaves, improve airflow, avoid overhead watering, and ensure the soil drains freely.
