Magnolia Little Gem
Magnolia grandiflora Little Gem is a type of magnolia tree ideal for smaller gardens and as a street tree, due to its compact, narrowly-columnar growth habit. This tree has glossy, deep-green leaves with brown felt underneath and produces white, citrus-scented flowers from spring through autumn. It is also tolerant of poorly-drained positions. The leaves of Magnolia grandiflora Little Gem typically measure 12.5cm long by 5cm wide. This evergreen tree is native to the southeastern United States. 6m x 4m after ten years.
Trimming: Trim lightly after flowering to maintain its natural shape and remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches. As a specimen tree, it requires minimal pruning; if used for hedging or screening, trim more regularly to encourage denser growth.
Deadheading: Deadheading is generally not required. However, spent flowers can be removed if desired to keep the tree looking tidy and encourage a neater appearance.
Fertilising: Apply a slow-release fertiliser suitable for acid-loving plants in spring. Alternatively, spread compost around the root zone to support healthy foliage and promote vibrant flowering.
Watering: Water thoroughly during establishment, particularly in the first couple of summers. Once established, provide additional watering during prolonged dry periods, as magnolias prefer consistently moist soil.
Pest Control: Keep an eye out for scale insects and aphids, which can occasionally affect leaves and stems. Treat infestations with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap as needed.
Disease Management: Watch for signs of leaf spot and root rot. Ensure good air circulation and avoid waterlogging to prevent disease. Remove affected leaves promptly and treat with a suitable fungicide if necessary.
