Leucadendron Starburst

Leucadendron Starburst is a beautiful shrub that brings colour and texture to any garden setting. Known for its vibrant, yellow and red bracts that resemble a starburst, this plant is a standout feature in gardens, offering visual interest throughout the year.

Growing to a height of about 1.5m with a similar spread, Leucadendron Starburst is ideal for creating focal points in garden beds, borders, or as a stunning container plant. Its evergreen nature and architectural form make it perfect for contemporary garden designs.

This variety thrives in well-drained soil and prefers a sunny location, where it can receive ample light to enhance its colourful display. Leucadendron Starburst is drought-tolerant once established, making it a great option for water-wise gardens and low-maintenance landscapes.

Trimming: Trim lightly after flowering to maintain a compact shape and encourage bushy new growth. Cut back leafy stems rather than old bare wood, as Leucadendrons do not respond well to being pruned too hard into leafless stems.

Deadheading: Remove spent flower heads after flowering to keep the plant tidy and to encourage strong new growth for the next season. This is one of the main routine maintenance tasks for Leucadendron ‘Starburst’.

Fertilising: Fertilise very sparingly, if at all. Leucadendrons prefer low-nutrient, slightly acidic soils and can be damaged by strong fertilisers, especially those high in phosphorus.

Watering: Water regularly while establishing, then only during extended dry periods. Once established, Leucadendron ‘Starburst’ is relatively drought tolerant, but it must have excellent drainage and should never sit in wet soil.

Pest control: Pest problems are usually minimal, and routine spraying is not normally needed. Keep the plant healthy with good air flow and free-draining soil, and inspect occasionally for any general sap-sucking insects if growth looks stressed.

Disease management: The main issue to watch for is root rot, especially Phytophthora, in poorly drained soil. Humid or crowded conditions can also encourage fungal leaf spotting, so avoid overhead watering where possible, allow good air circulation, and remove affected growth promptly.
