Leucadendron Candy Delight is a compact evergreen shrub grown for its cream bracts flushed candy pink. The coloured bracts surround a small central cone and hold their colour for weeks, making this leucadendron a reliable choice for long-lasting garden interest and cut flowers. Plants grow to around 1 to 1.5m high and wide, forming a dense, rounded bush with attractive grey-green foliage year-round.
This leucadendron suits a coastal garden, a low-water modern planting, or a dry sunny border. Use several plants together for a massed block of colour, or place a single specimen where the bract colour can be appreciated up close. It pairs well with other proteas, ornamental grasses, and leucospermums in a water-wise bed.
Grow Candy Delight in full sun with free-draining, low-phosphorus soil. Sandy or gravelly ground suits it well. Rich or fertilised soil shortens the plant's life, so avoid adding compost or standard fertiliser at planting. Good airflow around the plant is important.
This leucadendron is not suited to frost-prone inland areas such as Central Otago or inland Southland without shelter. Leucadendrons are not listed as toxic to pets, but as with any garden plant, discourage pets from chewing stems or foliage.
Trimming: Trim after the bracts fade, cutting stems back by up to one third to keep the plant compact and bushy. Cutting stems for the vase counts as pruning. Do not cut into old, bare wood, as leucadendrons are slow to reshoot from hard cuts.
Deadheading: Deadheading is not essential. Removing spent bracts tidies the plant and can encourage fresh growth, but leaving them in place does no harm.
Fertilising: Do not use standard fertiliser. Leucadendrons are sensitive to phosphorus and excess nutrients shorten their lifespan. If feeding at all, use a low-phosphorus native or protea-specific feed in spring, applied sparingly.
Watering: Water regularly through the first year to help the plant establish. Once settled, leucadendrons are drought-tolerant and need watering only during prolonged dry spells. Avoid overwatering, as wet roots cause rapid decline.
Pest Control: Leucadendrons are generally trouble-free. Check occasionally for scale and mealybugs on stressed plants, and treat early with horticultural oil if found.
Disease Management: Free-draining soil and good airflow are the best defences. Wet or heavy soil encourages Phytophthora root rot, which is the most common cause of decline in this genus. Avoid planting in low-lying spots where water sits after rain.
