Leptospermum Merinda is an upright evergreen shrub grown for its vibrant magenta flowers. The blooms are small and five-petalled, carried in generous numbers along the stems in spring, typically from September through to November. The foliage is fine and aromatic, giving the plant a light, airy texture. Mature size reaches around 1.5 to 2m high and 1 to 1.5m wide.
This leptospermum suits a coastal garden, a native-style planting, or a modern low-water border. Its upright habit makes it a useful screening plant or informal hedge. Mass several together for a strong seasonal display, or use it as a backdrop to lower-growing perennials and grasses. The magenta flowers pair well with silver foliage plants and soft whites.
Grow Merinda in full sun for the best flowering. It needs free-draining soil and tolerates poor, sandy, or slightly acidic ground. Good airflow helps keep the plant healthy. Avoid rich, wet soils, which suit it poorly.
Trim lightly after flowering to keep a tidy shape. This leptospermum is frost-tender and is not suited to frost-prone inland areas such as Central Otago or inland Southland without shelter. The pet toxicity of leptospermum is not clearly established, so as a precaution keep pets from eating the foliage or flowers.
