Leptospermum Gaiety Girl

Leptospermum Gaiety Girl is a compact flowering shrub in the tea tree family, grown for its prolific small blooms and fine-textured foliage. The flowers appear in profusion along the stems in spring, creating a dense, airy display. The plant has a neat, rounded habit and stays at around 1 to 1.5m high and wide, making it a manageable choice for most garden settings.

This leptospermum suits a coastal garden, a native-style planting, or a low-water modern border. It works well massed along a path or bank to create a soft, uniform effect, or as a single accent shrub beside a fence or deck. It pairs naturally with grasses, hebes, and other New Zealand natives.

Grow Gaiety Girl in full sun to light shade. It needs free-draining soil and tolerates poor or sandy ground well. Good airflow around the plant supports healthy growth. Avoid heavy, wet soil, which suits it poorly.

Trim after flowering to keep the shape tidy. Leptospermum can be frost-tender, so it is not well suited to frost-prone inland areas such as Central Otago or inland Southland without protection. Pet toxicity for leptospermum is not clearly established, so treat it with caution in households with pets and discourage chewing.

Trimming: Trim lightly after flowering in late spring to early summer. Shape the plant by cutting back the flowered stems, but avoid cutting into old bare wood as leptospermum is slow to reshoot from it. Regular light trimming keeps the plant dense and compact.

Deadheading: Deadheading is not essential. The spent blooms are small and not unsightly, and leaving them does no harm. If you prefer a tidier look, a light trim after flowering achieves the same result.

Fertilising: Feed in spring with a slow-release fertiliser suited to natives or low-phosphorus shrubs. Leptospermum grows well in lean soil and does not need heavy feeding. Over-fertilising can promote soft, disease-prone growth.

Watering: Water regularly through the first season to establish the root system. Once established, leptospermum is drought-tolerant and needs water only during long dry spells. Avoid overwatering or waterlogged conditions.

Pest Control: Leptospermum is generally trouble-free. Watch for scale insects and aphids on new growth, and treat early with horticultural oil or a suitable spray if numbers build.

Disease Management: Free-draining soil and good airflow prevent most problems. Wet or compacted soil increases the risk of Phytophthora root rot, which is the main threat. Clear fallen debris from around the base to reduce fungal risk.
