Ilex aquifolium 'Angustifolium' is a narrow-leaved form of English holly, valued for its glossy, dark green, slender leaves with softer spines compared to typical hollies. It maintains a dense, upright habit and can produce small white flowers in spring, followed by red berries in autumn if both male and female plants are present. With a slow-growing, bushy form reaching around 2-4 metres high and 1.5-2 metres wide, it is ideal for formal, woodland, coastal, and wildlife-friendly garden styles.
Plant in full sun to partial shade with moist, free-draining soil. Tolerates a range of conditions including wind, coastal exposure, and light frost. Space plants 1-1.5 metres apart for hedging or structured planting. Prune in late winter or early spring to shape and maintain density. A hardy, low-maintenance shrub that provides year-round structure and seasonal interest, especially in mixed borders or as a clipped hedge.
Trimming: Prune in late winter or early spring to shape and control size. This narrow-leaved holly responds well to trimming and can be lightly shaped as needed. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches to maintain a strong framework.
Deadheading: Not applicable, as Ilex aquifolium is grown for its foliage and berries. However, removing any faded or dried-out berries can tidy the plant if needed.
Fertilising: Feed in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser. In poor soils, a mulch of compost or well-rotted manure can be added in autumn to improve soil health.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase. Once established, it is relatively drought-tolerant but benefits from deep watering during extended dry periods, particularly in summer.
Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant. Occasionally, holly leaf miner or scale insects may appear-prune out affected areas and treat with horticultural oil or neem oil if necessary.
Disease Management: Very low susceptibility to disease. Ensure good airflow through the plant and avoid waterlogging to prevent root issues. Remove any diseased or discoloured foliage promptly to maintain plant health.
