Hypericum Moonlight
Notify MeHypericum Moonlight is a low-growing, semi-evergreen sub-shrub admired for its sulphur-yellow flowers and finely textured, blue-green foliage. Flowering in its first year from seed, it creates a cheerful display through early to midsummer and is well-suited to sunny, free-draining positions.
Ideal for rockeries, gravel gardens, or the front of sunny borders, it prefers alkaline to neutral soil and requires good drainage, especially in winter. Drought-tolerant once established, it forms a soft, ground-covering mound around 25 cm tall when in flower, offering reliable colour and foliage contrast in compact garden spaces.
Trimming: Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and remove spent stems. In early spring, cut back up to one-third of the plant to encourage fresh, compact growth.
Deadheading: Not essential, but removing spent flowers can tidy the plant and may encourage a second, lighter flush of flowering.
Fertilising: Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth and flowering.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment and in prolonged dry conditions. Once established, Moonlight is relatively drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional watering during hot, dry spells.
Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant, though keep an eye out for aphids on tender new shoots. Treat with insecticidal soap if needed.
Disease Management: Hypericum can be susceptible to rust or leaf spot. Watch for yellowing or spotting on leaves and remove affected foliage promptly. Ensure good airflow around the plant and avoid overhead watering to minimise fungal issues.
